Discover records of enslavement from across North Carolina through the People Not Property project from UNC-Greensboro. The virtual presentation will be held Monday, November 7, 1-2 p.m., as part of the Friends of the Archives annual meeting. This compiled digital archive material helps amplify the stories of slaves for both students and historians.

Historians will discuss exciting new research about the Regulator Movement in North Carolina during an upcoming program presented by the State Archives. The virtual roundtable, “The Regulator Movement and New Research,” will be held Tuesday, May 24, 12 – 1 p.m. Using archival documents, the speakers explore the Battle of Alamance and its connection to the Regulator Movement.
State Archivists will host a round table discussing Outlander and what is factual accurate on April 19, 2022. Seasons 4-6 take place in 18th century North Carolina, and the State Archives hold many documents to help explain the history Outlander is portraying. Some of the places explored include Tryon Palace and Alamance Battleground.
To celebrate National Poetry Month in 2022, the State Archives will host a virtual program entitled "History in Verse", featuring N.C. Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green. The first African American and third women to be appointed as the state's Poet Laureate, her use of primary sources and incorporating them into her poetry, it adds a relationship between art and history.
On March 22, 2022, join Ph.D. candidates Madison Helman and Jewel Parker as they share their discoveries in the State Archives that contributes to their work on murder ballad subjects and women healers. The panel will highlight on-site research material for women's studies and collections on the North Carolina Digital Collection.
Deputy Secretary for Archives and History, Dr. Darin Waters, shares his personal research into his family history with a virtual presentation on February 23, 2022, entitled "Discovering and Telling Lost and Unknown Stories: A Family Odyssey". Dr. Waters tells how the State Archives and other public collections helped in finding more out his family's story.
The State Library and State Archives will host a virtual North Carolina Trivia Night on January 27, 2022. You can show off your knowledge of North Carolina history, geography, and culture. You can play by yourself or join a team. While no prizes are available, you can earn bragging rights for your knowledge of North Carolina.
The State Archives dig into their various collections exploring holiday foods. Recipes and descriptions from Old Christmas in Rodanthe, holiday feasts on military bases, and 150-year-old recipes for a DIY gift are all discussed on December 14, 2021. Panelists come from the Outer Banks History Center, the Military Collection Archivists, and our intern.
The Friends of the Archives host their annual meeting virtually in 2021. The program, "North Carolina Cemeteries: Documentation and Research", explores cemetery research and how it can shape the past. The presentation includes identifying and protecting cemeteries, preserving historic cemeteries, how cemeteries help in genealogy research, and best practices for cemetery identification.
Staff from various branches of the State Archives discuss the colonial court records of North Carolina. 300 volunteers helped transcribe these documents, allowing genealogists and educators to access key information. Such highlighted items include property, labor, gender roles, and trade goods information. This virtual roundtable took play in June 2021.
