The Fall 2026 internship positions are listed below. Be sure to expand and read the descriptions of each internship that you are interested in. Please fill out the Internship Application by the end of day on August 1st, 2026.
Section: Special Collections, Oral History Unit
Description: The intern will assist the Oral Historian in the description and arrangement of the collection. This includes metadata clean up, summarization, and finding aid creation. The intern will also work with the creation and editing of transcriptions. The goal of the internship is to increase overall interview accessibility and support digital uploading.
Major Tasks Involved:
• This position will include indexing, transcribing, metadata work, and summarization.
• A blog will be required as well as a presentation at the conclusion of the internship.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in public history or similar, minimum. Working toward a master’s degree in public history or library science preferred. The position would require students to work with digital access, transcription, and indexing. Some oral history experience preferable.
Estimated hours: 20 hours/week
Able to work remotely? Remote with optional Hybrid work at the Western Regional Archives in Asheville, NC.
Section: Records Description Unit, Government Records Section
Description: Intern will work with the Records Description Unit on a variety of county records projects as a processing assistant. These projects will provide an introduction to working with a variety of local records, including court records and estate records. These projects include processing Guilford County divorce records, barcoding legacy county records, creating container lists for county estates records, and appraising and processing incoming county records. Interns will serve as a processing assistant to the Records Description Unit and learn how to organize and arrange archival materials and how to maintain intellectual control over government records. Additionally, the intern will assist with SANC’s outreach programming, with an expectation of developing at least one blog post and/or social media post related to their internship.
Major Tasks Involved:
- Processing Guilford County Divorce Records
- Appraising and processing incoming county records
- Creating container lists of legacy county estate records
- Barcoding and collecting data on legacy county records
- Participation in other outreach activities, such as blogging and creating social media posts
Qualifications: Graduate student in Library/Information Science, Public History, or History preferred.
Estimated hours: 15 hours/week
Able to work remotely? Onsite at our downtown Raleigh location.
Section: Outreach & Development Unit
Description: The intern will work with the State Archives Outreach Coordinator to build a box of reproductions relating to Freedom Park. Research will include surveys of digitized images/documents and the online catalog to identify records in State Archives’ collections relating to each of the 20+ individuals the Park memorializes.
Major Tasks Involved:
- Researching State Archives collections
- Gathering, reproducing, and organizing images and documents in folders
- Labeling reproductions with appropriate citations; creating and labeling folders
- Rehousing original Freedom Park organization collection
- Teamwork with staff to produce final product
Qualifications: History, public history, American Studies, or archives concentrations preferred. Graduate student or advance undergraduate.
Estimated hours: 10 hours/week
