OBHC Mission Statement
The mission of the Outer Banks History Center is to collect, preserve, and provide public access to historical and documentary materials relating to coastal North Carolina, and to serve as an accessible, service-oriented center for historical research and inquiry.
It is the responsibility of the Outer Banks History Center to:
- Promote and safeguard the documentary heritage of the coastal North Carolina region.
- Collect and care for private and organizational papers, photographs, audio-visual recordings, and ephemera that document the history and culture of coastal North Carolina.
- Document the history of disadvantaged, marginalized, and underdocumented communities in the coastal North Carolina region.
- Provide efficient onsite and remote research services to individuals and organizations.
- Preserve materials of enduring value to the highest archival and library standards.
- Provide technical expertise to individuals and organizations regarding conservation and preservation of records, family papers, and documentary collections.
- Promote Outer Banks History Center collections using educational public programming that increases awareness of the history and culture of the North Carolina coast.
