The Archives Teacher Institute, June 14-16 at the State Archives in Raleigh, is your chance to create new lesson components from old materials!

Have you ever wanted to explore 250-year-old primary sources or dreamed of making historical discoveries? We’re selecting 15 teachers to spend a full day in the Archives’ Search Room digging through records relating to their county or region. Archives staff will be on hand to help locate and interpret materials. In partnership with Carolina K-12, we’ll present professional development sessions before and after research time to help connect records to classroom engagement strategies.

Schedule:

June 14, 5:30-8 p.m. Convening
Participants arrive in Raleigh and gather for a welcome dinner and opening keynote by DNCR Deputy Secretary for the Office of Archives & History Darin Waters, Ph.D.

June 15, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Digging In

Research in the Archives’ Search Room with opportunities to access online resources and secondary sources in the Library of N.C.

June 16, 9 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Sharing Stories and Strategies

Share your discoveries with other teachers. Cori Greer-Banks, Director of Carolina K-12 and experienced teacher, will help shape ideas for bringing Revolution-era county records to the classroom.

In addition to research discoveries, a peer network, and new ideas to bring local history to the classroom, participants will receive:

  • 1.5 CEUs
  • Hotel accommodation for attendees driving more than 50 miles (one way)
  • $100 honorarium (with additional funds to cover travel)
  • Most meals

Applications are now open for the 2026 Archives Teacher Institute and will close on April 20 at midnight. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 1.
