Records Management Services and Training

The Government Records Section is part of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and Records. Its primary mission is to provide and administer records management services to state government agencies, local government agencies, and state-supported institutions of higher education in North Carolina in accordance with General Statutes 121 and 132 and the mandate provided in these laws for the preservation of the historical record of this state.

Specifically this mission includes the following functions:

  • To aid its clients in the efficient creation, maintenance, disposal, or preservation of their records, regardless of medium or format.
  • To formulate complete and accurate records retention and disposition schedules that comply with the provisions of G.S. 121 and 132 and meet accepted standards for administrative, legal, and archival values.
  • To manage government records throughout their lifecycle, from creation to disposition.
  • To arrange and describe government records of historical value.
  • To provide secure and environmentally safe records storage facilities.
  • To provide efficient and timely records reference and retrieval services.

In order to meet these goals, the Government Records Section provides many services and training tools geared towards the needs of county, municipal, state agency, and university officials. Often these services and training opportunities are offered in cooperation with the Digital Services Section of the Division of Archives and Records.
