Biographical Note

<bioghist>

Heulon Dean was born 10 February 1925, in Granville County, NC, son of Franklin Pearce Dean and Minnie Williford Dean. His parents were farmers and moved to Wake County to avoid the Granville Wilt that was taking over tobacco grown in the Granville County area. The family relocated to the community of Needmore just north of Fuquay-Varina, then known as Fuquay Springs. The Dean family included Heulon and three brothers - Hursel Grant Dean, Jesse Lee Dean, and Alfred Stanley Dean - and one sister - Margaret Elizabeth Dean.

Heulon attended local public school and graduated from the Fuquay Springs High School in 1941 at the age of sixteen. He was drafted into the United States Army on 28 October 1944. Following basic training at Fort Blanding, Florida, he was sent to Europe where he was assigned to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 423rd Infantry regiment, 106th Infantry Division. He was a replacement in the Division that took the brunt of the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He served in both the Regimental and Division headquarters as Acting Sergeant Major. After the surrender, his Division was assigned to occupy Germany. Later, Dean was selected to escort High Point enlisted men and officers back to the United States for discharge, handling all their records. Back at home, he served in Fort Lee, Virginia, Quartermaster School until being discharged on 30 July 1946.

Immediately following his discharge, Dean interviewed for a position as an Assistant Manager of Proctor Barbour Company, Inc., in Fuquay Springs, the largest retail hardware, furniture, appliance, and building supply company in North Carolina. He was hired and within a year was promoted to Manager. Dean worked at Proctor Barbour for eleven years and was very active in the cultural and civic life of Fuquay Springs. He married Alta Broughman in August of 1948, and they had one daughter, Lisa Carol Dean (m. Harold Upchurch, Jr., and adopted son Zachary Ivan Upchurch from Russia). Dean is also credited with spearheading and leading the successful fight to have the first paved streets in the Town of Fuquay Springs and for leading the effort to change the name of the town from Fuquay Springs to Fuquay-Varina, NC. While working for Proctor Barbour, Dean also wrote for the local newspaper and later the Raleigh
News and Observer
and the
Raleigh Times
doing news stories and features about the local area and illustrating them with photographs. He took night courses at North Carolina State University where he studied photoghraphy under Dr. Landis Bennett. These classes and his newspaper photography experience inspired him to decide to become a professional photographer.

Dean left Proctor Barbour in 1957 and opened Heulon Dean Studio, which soon became Heulon Dean and Associates Photography. His studio became very successful and built one of the first Custom Color Labs for producing portraits for himself and for other photographers in the area. Dean is a member of the Professional Photographers of North Carolina and over the years held many offices in that organization including President and Executive Director. He was also an active member of the Professional Photographers of America, earning a Craftsmans Degree from that organization as well as their Outstanding Service award. Dean has been the recipient of numerous state and national awards and honors for his photography and earned many Merit Gold Bars in state and national competitions. His civic involvement includes service as a Town of Fuquay Springs Commissioner, Director and member of the Fuquay Springs Chamber of Commerce and for eighteen years Director of the Miss Wake County Pageant. He was a member of officer in the Fuquay Springs Lions Club and President of the Fuquay Springs Jaycees. He was awarded the honor of Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1958 by the Jaycees, Lion of the Year for 1965-1966, and Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1972.

Dean is a lifelong member of the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church and is a Life Deacon. Following the death of his first wife, he married Jane Elmgren Dean in 1988, and they served together as co-chairpersons for a four million dollar building program for the church. Dean is also managing partner of Bur-Dean Investments, a firm that among other ventures owns the Lighthouse Convention Center in Raleigh, NC. He is a trustee of the Lighthouse Christian Foundation and also a founder of the Patriot State Bank of Fuquay-Varina. Dean operated Heulon Dean and Associates Photography until the 1990's when he began a phased retirement.

Collection Overview

Sixty-three (63) 4"x5" black and white photographic negatives dating 1950 through 1961 depicting various events, structures, historic sites, and people in and related to the town of Fuquay-Varina, NC (Wake County). All photos were taken by Heulon Dean.

<arrangement>

Collection Arrangement

Collection is divided into series based on the year the photos were taken and individual negatives are assigned a unique call number beginning with the last two digits of the year the photo was taken followed by a number generated consecutively as photos were filed. This filing and numbering scheme was developed by the photographer/donor, and every effort has been made to maintain this original system so that future additions to the collection can be readily merged into the existing system and the photographer's papers, should they be acquired, will be a useful compliment to these photographs.
