These pathfinders provide introductions to the materials on particular subjects, but are not meant to be comprehensive.
Interested in locating archival resources to use in your classroom? Search the MARS (Manuscript and Archives Reference System), the online catalog for the State Archives, Government Records Branch, Outer Banks History Center, and Western Regional Archives. Although the information available in MARS is extensive, it does not include every item in our collection. Selected documents can be viewed through MARS, but it primarily serves as an index to archival holdings. Online tutorials on searching in the MARS catalog are available on YouTube.
Finding aids are narrative descriptions of archival materials and often provide more detailed information about individual collections than can be found in MARS, including box and folder lists. The finding aids for State Archives are organized by type of materials; the Outer Banks History Center and Western Regional Archives finding aids are listed separately.
